no I did not experience it again as I downgraded to 8.10 and did not
have it installed. I installed it now on 8.10. I do not remember what
triggered this on jaunty. Notice it was the dirty kernel.

Valgrind does not seem to indicate much to me, two added lines in
xsession-errors:

Everything went fine until I tried to change my nickname.
Now my altered nickname is stuck in the cache and I can no longer
connect to the server.

this solved it:

Now it is out of the cache. I can again just run irssi. Also irssi
--nick=thomasdelbeke and later irssi gives no problems. So we can close
this one down.
It still should not stay in the cache I think. Also the alphanumeric

Sorry for posting a command with the wrong syntax here. Anyway, I
changed the command I found on line because I experienced trouble after
a while (with the command in my terminal memory - up arrow), sorry about
that. I retried with the original command and it worked for the
Reopening due to persistent problems. Bug or Internet connectivity? A
simultaneous torrent download and firefox session did not indicate any
problems. The hang up on the gdb session was induced because it hanged
Ctrl+C The terminal output was spontaneous.
