[Ubuntu-ch] Ubuntu Global Jam – August 2016

2016-08-19 Thread Alan Pope
Hello,

I write you in your capacity as LoCo admin/contact, because this cycle's
Ubuntu Global Jam is announced and will happen on 26-28 August 2016.
It's the event where a lot of Ubuntu LoCo teams get together to work on
Ubuntu together, to promote it and to have fun.

As always we have some good documentation up at [1] explaining how to
best go about planning the event for your LoCo team. We also provide a
short video to explain the most basic steps [2].

It's a good idea to reach out to your team as soon as you can, find out
who can help with the planning of which bits and also to find out who's
interested in doing what. Once you have at least the basic details
ready, add your
event to [3].

I'm sure you are going to have a great time with your team, so please
share your story about how the whole event went. The world wants to know
about all the great things you do in your country.

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch. Another
good place to be signed up to is the loco-contacts@ mailing list [4],
which you should be signed up to in any case.

If you are up for real-time discussion, check out #ubuntu-locoteams on
freenode [5].

One last point: promote, share, and re-share all the great things you see!

[ubuntu-ec] Ubuntu Global Jam

2014-11-06 Thread Michael Hall
Hello Ecuador!

The global Ubuntu community will be getting together in their local area
this September 12-14 for another Ubuntu Global Jam weekend. During these
events we encourage teams to work together to contribute to Ubuntu
through development, translations, documentation, testing and more.
We've documented some of the things you can do, and some help on how to
run your own Global Jam event, on the wiki at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam

The Community Team will be hosting two on-air broadcasts tomorrow at
1000 UTC and another at 1900 UTC to help teams plan, organize and run
their events. If you have any questions, are looking for ideas, or want
to share your ideas and experience with LoCo Teams members who are doing
this for the first time, please come along and participate.

The broadcast will be hosted on http://ubuntuonair.com with the
#ubuntu-on-air IRC channel (also embedded on the website above). If you
want to join and share your stories, please let one of the hosts know in
IRC and they can invite you to the video.

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu Global Jam 2013

2013-09-17 Thread Shrinivasan T
Ubuntu is growing by the community. Ubuntu runs many events to get
more volunteers and contributions.

Global Jam is one of the events where anyone can provide their
contributions, along with lot of people around the globe.

We had the event in Sep 13,14,and 15 2013.

Ubuntu-IN LoCo team had the event online at #ubuntu-in IRC channel at
irc.freenode.net

We can do any of the following during these days.

Development
Packaging
Testing
Documentation
Artwork
Triaging Bugs
Reporting Bugs
Translation

I picked up on packaging and documentation.

I learnt python packaging.
Installed python-stdeb

http://shallowsky.com/blog/programming/python-debian-packages-w-stdeb.html

This tutorial explains how can we package the python software.

Packaged the software qrcode
https://github.com/lincolnloop/python-qrcode

It provided nice installable deb files.

Next step is to create PPA in launchpad.

http://shallowsky.com/blog/programming/packaging-launchpad-ppas.html
This link explains this.

My PPA is accepted, but still,I had some troubles in sending my deb
files to PPA.
Exploring more about this.

Wanted to contribute for Kubuntu Documentation.
Found the existing tasks here.
https://trello.com/kubuntu
https://trello.com/b/4zyxwgRP/kubuntu-docs-saucy-salamander

Can not work on this much as the existing doc itself looks very fine.
Read the existing doc for any spell errors. everything looks fine.

We had our Local Linux Users group's monthly meeting.
Presented about Ubuntu Global Jam.
Explained how anyone can contribute for ubuntu in various ways.
Explored Launchpad's bug process.

http://www.slideshare.net/tshrinivasan/contribute-toubuntu

Wrote an article in Tamil about Launchpad bug process for Kaniyam.com,
an online E-Magazine for Free Open Source Software in Tamil.

Will organize a event locally to do these kind of Jam for
contributing, next time.

Thanks for the Ubuntu team for such events.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Global Jam - Coventry - 7th - 9th September

2012-08-28 Thread Martin Meredith
Good Afternoon all!

I thought I'd send out a quick email to announce that we'll be hosting
the Ubuntu Global Jam over at Protec Innovations on the 7th through
9th September.

The Ubuntu Global Jam is an incredible opportunity for the Ubuntu
community to unite together around the weekend of 7th - 9th September
2012 to work together to improve Ubuntu. Everyone is able to
contribute to the Jam, and everyone is welcome and encouraged to get
involved. Curious about how to make a real difference to Ubuntu? This
is a great chance to make that difference.

The Ubuntu Global Jam incorporates events that have been organized
over the world to get Ubuntu contributors and fans together to have a
great time and improve Ubuntu. Each event has one or more of our
themes:

Bugs - finding, triaging and fixing bugs.
Testing - testing the new release and reporting your feedback.
Upgrade - upgrading to Quantal from Precise and reporting your upgrade
experience.
Documentation - writing documentation about how to use Ubuntu and how
to join the community.
Translations - translating Ubuntu and helping to make it available in
everyone's local language.
Packaging - work on Ubuntu packages and improve them.

As we have in previous years, our main focus will be on dealing with
bugs - the last 3 times we've ran the Global Jam - the Birmingham /
West Midlands team have stomped all over the other teams in dealing
with bugs - so I can't see why we shouldn't be able to do it again.
However, we've also got myself on hand should you be interested in
learning more about other parts of contributing to Ubuntu.

Please note - we won't be able to provide hardware for you to work
with - so please do bring along a Laptop, or a machine to work with.

Refreshments will be provided, however, there is also an ASDA a few
minutes walk down the road :)

We've setup a signup at http://ugj-cov.eventbrite.co.uk/ so that we
can get an idea of numbers - so please sign up there if you're
planning to attend so we can plan accordingly.

Any questions? Feel free to reply and I'll attempt to answer them.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Global Jam and other Events

2012-08-16 Thread Alan Bell
We have a number of excuses coming up to go out and have fun together,
and I think we should grab all of these chances with all the hands we
can muster

6th-9th September
Ubuntu Global Jam
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam This is a few days set aside for
activities to improve Ubuntu, we have done a variety of online
activities in the past and I think that might work well again this time,
possibly using Google Hangouts to get together and do some testing of
the new Quantal release or other activities suggested on the wiki page,
please reply with suggestions of things you would like to do for this
and we will try and make it happen. I think I will be a bit busy working
at the Paralympics when this is happening but I would love to see the UK
contributing bugs and fixes and such to Quantal as part of the Global Jam.

13th September
Brighton Happy Hour - someone suggested Brighton and the date which is a
great idea, but I don't recall who it was, or what pub was specified,
Someone pick a pub in Brighton and lets make this happen! Please can
people in the area reply with pub suggestions and a general agreement on
the date.

22nd September
Farnham Happy Hour - various people are in the area or visiting and a
happy hour has been suggested, lets go to The Slug Lettuce
http://www.thegoodpubguide.co.uk/pub/view/The-Slug--Lettuce-GU9-7RX (I
will set up the loco directory event thing)

18th October
Launch of Ubuntu 12.10 the Quantal Quetzal - This will probably be a pub
meet up in London, I will talk to some Canonical contacts about the
venue for this.

29th November
We have had a request for a London Happy Hour around the end of
November, we have met up a number of times in West London, lets go East
for this one, perhaps somewhere near the Olympic Venues in Stratford or
closer to the river. I will check out some pubs for this one (always
happy to do that kind of research)

December sometime
Christmas event! What should we do this year, last year was a
fascinating but rather pricey meal served in pitch darkness at Dans Le
Noir. What would you like to do this year? Classy meal?/Night at a
show?/Pie and a Pint?/Coffee and mince pies at Starbucks?/Group visit to
Bletchley Park?/something else? let me know your thoughts and I will see
what can be sorted out.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Global Jam 2nd-4th March

2012-02-13 Thread Alan Bell

Hi all,

in a few weeks time there will be a focussed burst of activity on
Ubuntu, in the form of the Global Jam, which is basically a weekend of
various activities around the world encouraging people to contribute to
Ubuntu in some way. You can read more about it here

http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/1443/detail/

and various other places

http://www.jonobacon.org/2012/02/07/ubuntu-global-jam-call-for-events-2/
http://mhall119.com/2012/02/a-new-way-to-jam/

I am not sure we have any real-world events going on in the UK (but feel
free to organise one) however we could do some online activities, either
via IRC or audio using mumble, or a google hangout or something. I am
keen to go through and document and perhaps fix a bit once more the
installation process with Orca, if anyone else has suggestions of things
to do then speak now

Could be good to get everyone to just run through checkbox-unity on
their machine running the latest Ubuntu 12.04 + Unity + Compiz. Even
from a Live CD or USB key it could uncover bugs we haven't seen yet. I
found 4 today, one duplicate and 3 new ones, just running through that
test suite!

It's super easy (if a little time consuming [especially if you find
bugs]) but very rewarding to uncover and properly document these issues
_before_ release.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Global Jam 2nd-4th September

2011-07-08 Thread Alan Bell

here follows a message about the Ubuntu Global Jam, we should do something for
this.
Ideas on the back of an email . . .

Alan.

The Ubuntu Global Jam is a worldwide event in which Ubuntu LoCo Teams
get together at a local venue and work on Ubuntu, get know each other,
and otherwise just have a lot of fun! These events are simple to
organize, a great way of meeting people in your area, and a great way
of learning (at many of these events people share skills, techniques
and more about using and contributing to Ubuntu).

This Ubuntu Global Jam is also a particularly important one. Ubuntu
11.10 Oneiric Ocelot is shaping up to be a stunning release, and we are
all putting a lot of focus in ensuring that Unity gets lots of
testing, and our awesome LoCo community is helping with this.
Organizing an Ubuntu Global Jam event is a great opportunity to do
some of this testing and provide feedback to help make Oneiric better. I
strongly believe that this Ubuntu release is going to really help
Ubuntu bring Free Software to the masses.:-)

You can see the list of current events planned at
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/1011/detail/ and we would love to
encourage you to organize and event and participate!

   Organizing An Event
It is really simple. Here is how:

 1. Pick a date (a day between the 2nd-4th September 2011) and choose a
venue. The venue can simply be a coffee shop or bar that you all meet
at, or something more structured like a college or university. Many
teams just pick a coffee shop (not needing to inform the owners) and
just all agree to all meet up at the same time, date and location.
 2. Add your event to loco.ubuntu.com. To do this, go to
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/1011/detail/, make sure you are
signed in and then use the Add Team Event page to add your event.
Note: you need to be a member of your LoCo Team in Launchpad to add an
event to loco.ubuntu.com.
 3. Finally, spread the word! Blog about it, post about it on
Twitter/identi.ca (be sure to use the #globaljam hashtag!), post about
the event to your team's mailing list, put posters up around your local
area and more.

...and then, show up on the day of your event and have a great time!

2011-03-29 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
[English version follows]

Bonjour!

(752 rue sherbrooke ouest), comme l'an dernier.

votre intention ici: http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/team/842/detail/

--

First, my sincerest apologies for the last minute invitation.

I'm organizing the Ubuntu Global Jam event in Montreal again this year.

It will be held on April 2 and 3 from 11h to 17h at SUPINFO Montreal
(752 Sherbooke W).

For those wondering what this Global Jam is, it's a moment where the
global Ubuntu community coordinates itself to do one last sprint
together to identify (e.g. report on Launchpad), triage, and possibly
also fix bugs found in the current development version: Natty Narwhal
(Ubuntu 11.04), which is due to be released at the end of April.

Local teams around the world will get together in different locations
and online on IRC to work towards improving the development version
and identifying/fixing as many issues as possible, especially if they
affect their own users in having a great experience on Ubuntu.

Therefore, I invite everyone to come see us at SUPINFO Montreal to
help testing, debugging, or even writing documentation for Natty
Narwhal. You don't need to be a developer to help: any help is very
welcome; as long as you're sufficiently curious to try out Natty in
Live mode from a CD or USB key and to help us find and describe
issues. If you would like to write documentation for applications or
functions you think aren't as clear as they should be, that's great
too! And if all you want is to get to know more about Ubuntu, we won't
hesitate to show you around :)

If you plan on going, you can optionally let us know here:
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/team/842/detail/

Coordinates to get to SUPInfo are available from that page as well.
The closest metro station is McGill, about three minutes walking time
;)

If you're interested in running one but you're really not sure where
to start the Ubuntu Global Jam Bootcamp may be for you! The Classroom
team is running it tomorrow from 9AM-3PM California time in
#ubuntu-classroom (and #ubuntu-classroom-chat) on irc.ubuntu.com

Hey folks,

Ubuntu Global Jam[1] is nearing and as of me writing this mail there
are 33 events with a total of 103 registered participants across the
world!  On talking to a few people, we realized that a How to
Organize a Jam session is something that would be nice to have.  So,
the classroom team has gone all the way and organized the Ubuntu
Global Jam Bootcamp[2] to help LoCo teams plan for the upcoming Global
Jams.  We have sessions on bug triaging, iso testing, and
translations.  We also have members from 3 LoCo teams come ahead and
tell us how their rock their global jams!

The Ubuntu Global Jam Bootcamp runs on Monday 28th March 2011, from
1600 UTC[3] to 2200 UTC[4].   Join us in #ubuntu-classroom and
#ubuntu-classroom-chat and help us rock it!

If any of you plan to have one in your city, add it to our wiki page [0].
A summary will be added to the ubuntu loco website [1]. Thus everyone who

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu Global Jam on 1-3 April

2011-03-01 Thread Nitesh Mistry
Hello all,

As many of you might have already heard/read about [0], Ubuntu Global Jam
(UGJ) [1] will be held from 1st to 3rd of April this year for Natty
release cycle.

UGJ is a global event (as the name suggests) where all the local
communities (LoCos) around the world participate to make Ubuntu better.
There are many ways to get involved as mentioned on the wiki page [1].

Though it is preferable to have this event organised in person, it is also
possible to conduct this event on irc. Considering that organising such
event in person on a pan-India level might be too cumbersome, I suggest we
have a irc event this time. If there are enough people (read 3 or more)
willing to gather in a particular city, they can also conduct an in-person
event in parallel.

For the irc event I suggest we gather at #ubuntu-in channel where more
experienced among us can make themselves available in guiding others to
triage bugs, documentation, translations, testing, etc.

The intention of this mail is to invite suggestions in planning UGJ India
event.

In short, lets rock together and make this Indian community shine globally.
:)

One in Bangalore and the other in Mohali. So we should call them

Hope this clears the confusion which might have aroused esp for those on

dia nuestra querida distro!!!

 Peace!

My name is James (selinuxium -in #ubuntu-uk)

I am running the London GlobalJam venue, I also am a Southend resident.

Maybe we can chat and sort out, one for Sat and one Sun...

 Hello all,

I am a bit new to this list so still finding my feet.

The Southend on Sea Linux User Group is running a Ubuntu Global Jam on
both the 3rd and 4th of October, however I have no developers or
specialists within my group although we will demonstrate as best we can.

I would have thought there would be many Ubuntu developers in or around
my area we have a large generous venue free food and refreshments,
parking and two days worth of tutorials. We would like to draft in some
developers or other specialist such as programmers if we can, I am not
sure if this is the right place to do it but perhaps someone would be
 kind enough to tell me.

I dont think this has to be a big production. I'll quote Jorge from
the last Global Jam meeting[1]:

that's ok too

If you *want* to participate, surely the opportunity is there.

Yes, I know about it, I was at the UDS meeting where this was being
drawn up and I argued for it to be called 'Global Jam' instead of 'Bug
Jam'. So it's all good.

The reason we're not doing anything for the Global Jam is because I'm
fully booked with two classrooms, course materials, community center
navigation, meeting organisation and programming.

I need members of the LoCo to pull their weight when it comes to
organising and pulling off successful events. If you think you can
dedicate the required time and responsibly towards organising this or
other events, do jump right in at one of our meetings (next one on the
30th this month) and I will back you with all the resources required to
pull it off.

We're discussing involving ourselves with other events such as Sci-Fi
events too. This mitigates some of the organisational apathy in the
group as we don't need to create and set-up our own events, just attend
existing ones.

Thoughts?

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu Global Jam participation

2009-06-18 Thread Manish Sinha
Hi !
Just wanted to mention something that caught my eye yesterday. A Ubuntu
Global Jam has been scheduled from October 2nd to October 4th, later
this year.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam

I hope all of you might have heard about it.
All the three days are holiday - Fri,Sat,Sun of which Fri is a national
holiday. So finding an hour or two won't harm. I would myself probably
work on Documentation and some minor work on Bugs Tracker like assigning
packages to newly reported bugs.

The Jam incorporates a number themes:
Bugs,Testing,Documentation,Translations

The problem maybe that we cannot meet up and plan a event to get
together and work on this as we all might be at different part of the
country.
I feel we can contribute individually in some way from our own place.
That way if there are a sizable number of willing people, we could add
the ubuntu-in team's name on the wiki page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam/Events.

Thanks
