Bob, the behavior I've seen is that without the line in statusbar.conf, the applet won't show up at all even with a desktop file in /usr/lib/hildon-status-bar. You brought up a good point though, perhaps the resolution of this issue is a simple fix to hildon-desktop to load applets regardless of wh
