Ok, so I got it fixed, and it turns out that:
- what broke everything was installing nvidia-current.
- uninstalling nvidia* didn't fix the issue (this is huge: uninstalling
the package does not completely reverse the installation)
- I got it completely fixed by manually removing /etc/X11/xorg.con
This was intended for the list. But never mind, in the meanwhile I got
it fixed.
