Other people seem to be having the problem as well, for a couple of
Ubuntu releases at least. The instructions for fixing the problem on the
internet say to set UseDNS = no in client sshd

We have been testing this exact patch (with the exception of subtle
changelog variations, verified by debdiff) for 2 months now on thousands
of machines. It greatly improves autofs performance in a large group
environment. I've briefly tested the package uploaded to proposed to
verify that it

automounting when your primary group is large (thousands of users). The
bug has been addressed by increasing the group buffer size geometrically

Could you please test this again using the new gvfs, without unix
extension = no in the config file, and submit a new bug if this is
still a problem? To test with gvfs, simply go to the Places menu,
choose Connect to Server, and then fill in the information for your
Samba server.

This is because using 'ping host' attempts to look up a host using
DNS. Using 'smb://host/' uses lmhosts. If you were to go to Windows
and type 'ping host' it would fail the same way.
