I ran into the same issue recently and the solution turned out to do an
interation of
dovecot -n
and installing required packages until the above command ran without
complaints. In the end I had to install all of the following
ii dovecot-common 1:2.0.19-0ubuntu2.2

Mirza, as Costas suggests, the problem here was the config file.
The point about the logging of job output in upstart is well known.
Hopefully in 11.10 we will bring a new Upstart feature in to play that
will log job output automatically.
