There are a lot of audio apps that depend on JACK (Ardour
is no exception- both Ardour and JACK are by Paul Davis).

Just FYI- the automatic kernel 2.6.24-25-rt upgrade broke
glx in ubuntustudio (Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS). Reverting back to
kernel 2.6.24-24-rt solved the problem.

When using JACK, the message
"JACK tmpdir identified as [/dev/shm]"
is sent to stderr whenever a program attempts JACK detection
and JACKD is not running.
It seems to me that this behaviour is undesireable for the following
reasons:
