Just wondered whether anyone else was attending this? Keynote speaker is
Alan Cox. I get a free pass, but others might have to pay to get a seat...
should be interesting though

The machine reboots immediately after telling you it can't start X?
The error printed in the blue screen is useless anyway, it's just a
message telling you that it
having an idea of what graphics chipset you have might be useful also...

not sure what yu mean by graphic chipset but it does say nvidia 7xxx integrated
graphics on the box of the motherboard
which is here http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=623454

PS. Someone once told me that you don't get the grub menu if it is not a

You get prompted to press Esc if you want the boot menu. This shows the
normal grub menu with the recovery option.

I would think that is quite unlikely. Electrically HDMI is just DVI with
some extra pins for audio and so on (think SCART for the modern age).
HDCP is usually something

Because you're playing protected content. I have a PS3 and two monitors,

Possibly. Are you using the binary nvidia driver or the free nv one?
Either way I'd try and avoid desktop effects.

i think that motherboard chipset is too new for your operating system.
It's entirely possible that is the case. You could download an ISO of
Ubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5 (a test release of the next release of Ubuntu) and
see if that works?
From personal experience, X does seem to be giving me far fewer problems in
Gutsy - it also gives you the option to install a proprietary nvidia driver
'automagically' on first boot. It also detects my widescreen display
properly with no hacking of xorg.conf which is new.
You might find a Gutsy

i would like to try and avoid a test version until its out entirely...but i
guess i could give it a go!

Can i do this from when im in safe mode?
I have seen this before with Feisty and Nvidia.Have a look at the file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.In the section Device, look at the BusID.If it says
something like BusID PCI:0:5:0change it toBusID PCI:1:0:0 Then save and
start x as usual.

you certainly can:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf (you might want to read up on nano first, I
find the commands a bit counter-intuitive)
you might also try changing the driver type from vesa to nv
I really would recommend burning a Gutsy Tribe 5 ISO though - you might find

You may like to give Elisa a go - http://elisa.fluendo.com/

that DOES look nice!
Can this be installed on top of fiesty? can i use synaptic to install it?
and most importantly can i just exit the media centre and use the normal
desktop ( like windoze).?

Hmm, I'll take your word for it Chris but I've been using Gutsy for quite a
while now and X hasn't broken for weeks, even with the frequent
compiz-fusion updates - that's with an nvidia graphics chipset and
proprietary drivers installed.
