I am seriously considering going back to 8.10 or even 8.04 and I believe
that the only way to do this is to do a reinstall. If I go along this
track will I lose all my files?

That's assuming the existing installation has a /home partition
(hopefully this is the case).
I have no home partition but the installation is relatively new and the
amount of stuff in /home is quite small.

I would further add that I have a script sitting in my files right now
which will not work in 9.04 but a pound to a penny would work on 8.04
and maybe on 8.10.
