No improvement. X freezes within a minute of login, and I couldn't even
get it to work long enough to take a screenshot for bug 391439 until I
used command line instead of the desktop menu. Attaching Xorg.0.log and
dmesg output.

Hello Bryce,
My old PC has been replaced and I can't perform any test for the 9200SE ATI
board. So you may close this bug if you want.
I may test your solution for a Radeon™ HD 3200 Graphics, integrated in a
AMD 780G if you need it. I have no visual effect in standard but I can
get them when

Worse than before. Screen corruption starts happening immediately on
login (in fact, even before -- on the login screen). What's more: in
Jaunty, corruption was extremely rare with DRI turned off (I've seen it
once in 1-2 months of use). Now even with DRI off, I see screen
corruption after several

vga=791 kernel line option does not work
Mr. Bruce Harrington,
With my last comment I explained that I was not be able to supply the requested
lspci and Xorg.0.log for Ubuntu 9.10, since 9.10 does not install on my Hewlet
Packard 713n PC.
All the Ubuntu releases subsequent to 7.10, including Ubuntu 9,10, terminate
the installation
I was asked (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23098) to try
kernel patch (http://www.mail-archive.com/dri-
de...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg42703.html) if it solves the problem. Is
it possible to include it in ubuntu's daily live (at least temporarly)
so that I can test it?

The screen is now totally black.
Do you mean, it is black on initial boot or only when doing tty

Right after usplash or only after login or...?

I am facing the same issue with Karmic alpha 4. If a single port is connected
(DVI or VGA), X starts up fine; with both ports connected, I see vertical line

have gathered some logs:
