Got the bug today with a fresh install Karmic (20090916)
Since in Karmic there are no xorg.conf file exists in the /etc/X11
directory anymore, nvidia-settins doesn't like that. :( (Tried create an
empty xorg.conf file, no good)
In the end, you will need to run:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
the milestone simply indicates that they hope to have a fix in by the
beta release(a development milestone release). It could be in a daily
build this weekend, or prove difficult enough to fix that it misses the
milestone. Time will tell.. I'm hoping for this weekend.

I have been having the freezes problem, at least every 30 minutes,
I tried all the following suggestions.
1. Setting to none the visual effects
2. Removing compiz
3. Updating the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to several recommendations,

I did try it, sorry about the late response. I tried disabling DRI, and
etc as other have, and it did help a little but did not fix the problem
entirely. I do believe it is a DRI bug, I had a custom kernel on the
ubuntu 9.10 machine I was working with. It is now happily back to debian
lenny.

OK, it happened again. First X froze, and I had to shut down the
machine by powering it off. When it booted again, I logged in, and X
crashed a few seconds later. Here are the requested log files.
