Finally found solution and compisite is fully functional.
Solution is to disable PAT support in kernel command line.
Edit file /etc/default/grub and add:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=nopat
Then run update-grub as root and reboot.

Backing off to the 173 driver in Karmic doesn't fix this issue for me.
I'm still seeing random lockups with a 9600GT (have tried with 2
different cards). No issues with an 8800GT though. From what was said by

On jaunty 32bit standard (updated) kernel 2.6.28, eeepc 1000H hardware.
Trying the new xorg intel driver 2.9.0 from the X-updates ppa.
Driver displays only flashing garbage.
Driver 2.7.1 that was in the same PPA until
I verified that upgrading from 9.04 fgrlx works correctly due to right
xorg.conf settings, I suppose.

Updated the Intel driver on my EeePC 900 today.
Upon reboot, the screen resolution is 800x600 instead of the 1024x600 that the
hardware supports
The only screen resolutions available for selection are 640x480 and 800x600.

I can confirm this bug (with another ATI card - see below). Forcing the
card into PCI mode using the driver option 'radeon.agpmode=-1' is the
only solution for me (even though performance suffers); I tried AGP
modes 1, 2, 4 without any results; option 'EXANoDownloadFromScreen'
didn't work for me

a higher res than my main one, my desktop icons disappear into the
