I can confirm this bug. As was being discussed in bug #297245, changing the
options to NOMODESET does show the boot screen, but the screen turns black
after the splash screen. After sometime the WSoD appears.
I changed the driver from "intel" to "vesa" and i was able to atleast
login.

I found some xrandr commands in the forums that forced S-video out to TV:
xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1
xrandr --output S-video --auto
This works now, but still don't know how to get a working xorg.conf file
that does the same thing in Karmic.

I upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04 and just noticed that the "latest" kernel,
2.6.31-14-generic was not being used. I went into system>
administration>synaptic package manager and checked grub-pc which

I have the same issue on a clean install of 9.10 32-bit. Literally all I
did was install Ubuntu, run apt-get update, install FGLRX from Hardware
Drivers and reboot the system. The system boots to a black screen.
Rebooting in recovery mode and uninstalling the driver causes loading
xorg to fail, and
Firefox 3.5.4 update seems to have broken the pixellated images fix.

Oh, forgot!
The problem that occurs is that when the lid is closed while set to
suspend it dies, ssh etc stops responding, guessing it causes some sort
of panic. Setting it to "blank screen" produces the exact same result.

Oh, I actually found an sollution.
After reading bug #399520 , I found that a simple:
sudo rmmod wacom && sudo modprobe wacom
Solved my problem. IE just re-initializing the Wacom-driver set it back
to the right values. Don't know why it went out-of-sync actually, but
this seems like a good enough

Just tested Ubuntu Karmic Final Release and it still freezes my system after I
log in to gnome (less that 10 seconds). It's sad to know that Ubuntu is
incompatible with my computer now.
Kubuntu runs as smooth as always, though running Blender 3D also freezes

Can somebody upload a compiled kernel with Dave's patch, please? I
couldn't compile the linux-next because of several errors and I can't
apply Dave's patch the 2.6.32-rc5 kernel (source is downloaded from
Ubuntu kernel PPA), because of an error (Hunk #1 FAILED at 418.).
