Since a few days, after updating to ureadahead, my kdm login didn't

exit with non zero stauts when it is disabled. If it exits with 0 then
failsafe-x will not start and we won't have issue with KDM.

I just tried a.tom's xorg.conf and it works pretty well with gnome and
visual FX on from pannel board. I only get some black vertical line
reading video in totem with compiz enable (So i will disable it for the
moment).

Actually, I solved my problem, which was fglrx-related. Removing
/etc/ati/amdpcsdb was the solution to my error message fglrx: Unknown
EDID version 0. X server failed to start and I was in the situation
described above.
Anyway it looks like this is happening any time X11 fails to start.

I did have gdm installed but was using kdm, which might have caused the
problem.

I run Kubuntu karmic 9.10 on x86 64 with ecrypts.
A few days ago after a update, kDE was no more able to start after the
login while it have blocked the permission to access .ICEautority.
I have change the permission like said by ubuntu

This machine ran Jaunty fine with Compiz 3d etc.
When I updated to Karmic, compiz stopped working. It ran with software
rendering. However, glxgears appeared to have hardware acceleration.
Today I updated with the latest karmic updates and tried
