I found the reason for this behavior. It is a bug in teh upstart script
/etc/init/gdm.conf
Inside the script there is a test which dm should be started. If not gdm
it exits, but it exits with EXIT_STATUS=1, which then triggers the start
of the failsafe session.

I can confirm the same problem on my ThinkPad W500 using the internal
Intel graphics. After an upgrade to the latest version of x11-common,
the X11 server becomes unusable when started. Restarting (even after
removing batteries and AC adapter) does not solve the problem. Going to
a console login
Just a confirmation of Clays Post: Setting AccelMethod XAA and
RenderAccel Off works fine here, too. The Panel etc. get painted
correctly and the Performance is ways better than with AccelMethod EXA.

i have a toughbook Panasonic CF-U1 and it froze very often only when i use
touchscreen.
It turns out that the corruption does not occur when the 2007FP
monitor is replaced by a 2001FP. It is not, however, that particular
2007FP which is broken, since I have tested two different ones. I'm

on my Thinkpad X40 I have same problem. Jut for information, I am using
latest 2.6.32 kernel from kernel-ppa and latest intel drivers from xorg-
edgers ppa.

I also have just tried out the proposed gdm fix and am all up and
running again. Thanks to all who have helped with this one. My
situation was Ubuntu install where I added kubuntu-desktop and chose
kdm, hence gdm and kdm co-resident. As laptop had intel graphics I got

Given that no one answered my question, enough time passed for Debian
Squeeze to update its packages from sid so I can now open the keyboard
shortcut preferences window but I still can't use either one of my super
user keys as my open a terminal shortcut.
