When I switch to a VT, I instantly see a spinner, gdm displaying the
login screen. My old session is gone. Xorg.0.log.old indicates an X
crash
It should also be noted that every few seconds the (LCD) screen flickers
and the mouse returns to the cent
So you don't have cyrillic fonts installed and you get a warning. Hardly
a reason to break the xserver for those who need those fonts.

Yes, it still persists with 9.10 updated yesterday to latest available.
An additional (maybe unuseful) note: the no-video occurs on AVi files on
first minimizing action (i.e. minimize -> restore -> black video),
instead on second action with OGV files (i.e. minimize -> restore ->
video -> minimize
Could you try a newer release which doesn't install an xorg.conf
anymore, like 9.10 or Lucid alpha1. Then we'd see if the default is
right, and adjust that in the driver accordingly.

I can confirm this bug, also happening in a Acer TravelMate 5730.
Freezes happen after being suspended, within 0-6 hours after resuming
it. If I don't suspend, the machine runs smoothly.
