The looping behavior was actually caused by upstart/gdm, but we've
introduced an upstart script that makes it stop after 3 tries and dump
the user into the X failsafe mode. So afaik this should now all be
resolved. Plz reopen with additional detail if any remaining work is
needed.

Here is the current reproducibility for Karmic (9.10) on a fresh install
from a clean Canonical installation:
1. Install Canonical's 64-bit stock AMI ami-ab15f6c2 from http://alestic.com/
2. Run sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade
3. Install Xvfb: sudo apt-get install xvfb
4. Install
Jaunty Karmic sucks because of this!
Again have slow rendering on Intel 945GM.
I install Kernel 2.6.32 and now have good performance.

evtouch_hal.out attached. Trying to use a Dell SX2210T with Ubuntu
9.04. Would be comfortable if just the basic touchscreen portion
worked, even though the monitor supposedly supports multi-touch. dmesg
seems to see the USB bus, camera and touch screen, but the touch screen
portion does not

karmic kernel, 2.6.31-16-generic. I have seen no X freezes or crashes
during normal use. Also, the horrifyingly slow graphics that was such a
problem under jaunty is (at least mostly) gone, even though these are

I'm seeing similar behavior on a Dell Latitude D830 with an external keyboard
from Logitech.
The previous installation of Jaunty suspended the machine when the Suspend
button on the external keyboard was pressed, Karmic simply blanks the screen.
The key is mapped to XF86Sleep as intended.

the freeze was just a red herring: without a recent kernel, the newer
userspace driver couldn't enable some features related to the crash.
The real problem is probably in the Xorg driver. To narrow down when the
