I'm experiencing the same problem with both Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 beta 2
My hardware is a MSI mainboard MS-7536 with an Intel 945G/GZ Integrated
Graphics chip.
The screen freezes after a short while, sometimes even before the desktop is
loaded...
Mouse pointer was every time unmovable/unusable.

ubuntu (9.10) defaults my (old fashioned) 17 display to 1600x1200.
i can change it to the more usable 1024x768.
but after that restart is impossible.

Culprit seems to be the desktop effects: I noticed that switching worked
one way from the user who had desktop effects disabled. Once I disabled
the effects for both users, I can now switch back and forth between them
reliably.

It seems that Lucid have chosen vga16fb per default. vga16fb doesn't
support the vga= parameter and ends in broken tty consoles.
So I exchanged vga16fb with vesafb.
I added vga16fb to the blacklist (/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf)
and removed vesafb from it.

I go into amdcccle (Administrative), change to dual monitor setup and click
apply. Change happens immediately and everything works. I then reboot and the

After getting frustrated and deleting all gnome configurations with:
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity
obviously this is a bit of a pain, but better than the touchpad not
working. I will post another comment if the problem happens again.

I do not know if the growing gem objects is the real issue, but I filed
a bug 565981 for that. Note that I could reproduce the gem object growth
also with xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.192-2ubuntu2.
