I'm getting the same thing, on an old Dell Inspiron 8200.
Video card is an nVidia GeForce4 440 Go, using the 96.43.17 driver.
I also tried the 96.43.16 driver with the same results.
One strange thing that I found was that using gdm for a display manager, the
problem goes away.

Confirm this bug, please find the solution asap you genius! I own a
Gateway CX200X and it worked beautifully under Karmic but Lucy seemed to
have lost it. The drivers are shown on the repositories, but they are
now way to install them neither manually or through synaptic.

Unmet dependencies
I have uploaded a version that should work to x-updates in case it
helps. It will take a few hours to build though due to the PPA build
backlog. The version in lucid does not work and there has been no
released version of fpit that works with xserver 1.7+ so it comes from
git.

Hi, this bug is indeed obsoleted by Lucid release. Dual monitor setup is
correctly configured and works just fine for me now, although without
compiz.

According to the Xorg people working with the bug, in Xinerama mode -
event coordinates are relative to the primary secreen - Screen 0. But,
in the version of Xorg that now is in use with Lucid (1.7.6) event
coordinates are unsigned integers.
With unsigned integers, negative coordinates can not
apport information
