I was somehow guessing that EXA could be the culprit and tried to verify
my guess by disabling EXA.
How could I do that?

Haksell's fix (#50) works, but only in the strictest sense of the word.
It's touchpad functionality at it's most basic, is unaccelerated, and

After a few starts in 9.10 everything was back to normal, so it wasn't a big

add-on noscript activated in firefox while I open www.nationalgeographic.com.

This bug is still present in Lucid. I ran apport-collect above.
Note that I can generate modelines with cvt and add them with xrandr and it
will work just fine.
They are simply not automatically detected.
