Nothing in /proc/interupts made it look like msi was being used, but I
tried the 'pci=nomsi' thing anyway, no difference.
There is a difference with the 'nomodeset' in there, in that it takes
longer for there to be a problem, less likely to be hard locked

I'm also having this problem on 32 bit Kubuntu upgraded from 9.10
running kdm, so it's definitely not a gdm problem. Usually it's one
random program that freezes on me for about 30 seconds and everything
else is usually usable. This happens probably once every 20 minutes or
so and makes it extremel

Same here. I can also not reproduce it, but as I remember right, it
happend only with an attached Monitor. I had this problem once a day!
After disabling the visual effects I haven't seen X locks for around 10
days now.

I'm having a similar issue to this where X crashes on login maybe 1 out
of 3 times. It seems to be stable if I can get through the login
process. Attached is my Xorg log from the crash. Also, I found the
following in dmesg output which looks relevant:

I'm having what appears to be the same crash, though not when viewing an
image. My server crashes maybe 1 out of 3 times upon initial login. If
I get past this point, it seems to be stable. I've attached my Xorg log
from the crash.

This is a simple dependency problem in xorg crack pushers PPA, not in lucid
official repositories.
In the X Crack PPA,
