I can confirm the same problem on my new E6410 w/Intel graphics card.
All hints here helped me installing 10.04 (kubuntu) using the alternate
amd64-cd und updating the system in a recovery shell. But trying to

Actually, this reminds me of how viruses (the biological kind, not the computer
kind--although...) act/mutate and affect different people different ways
Not that I think this is a virus, though.
However, I have found that since my last update about 5 hours ago, it's
only crashed once

I can confirm this bug on my system too. I also found that turningn off
compiz at least resolves the problem.

I can confirm this on my system too. Removing compiz seems to solve the
problem running the latest and most up to date Ubuntu 10.04.
