I have the same error "Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module"
when booting my pc with ubuntu 10.04 and nvidia 7050 graghics.
After I repeated booting my pc, I noticed that in the case disk check is

Everything worked fine for me, but when my laptop completely lost power
due to a battery issue, I had no window borders after boot. I get the
same error messages when trying those commands. I'm running openSUS

When I boot up, when gdm starts I go to vt1 and see it initially starts on tty7:

I am no longer able to reproduce this with fresh install or upgrade.
Nikola are you able to reproduce this. You may be able to regenerate an
xorg.conf to test. Using the xorg-edgers PPA I have nvidia-current
working. it fixed bug #616023 as well.
