I reported be experience with nVidia. They confirm the bug, but says
it's an Ubuntu-only problem and closed the bug report.
They claim
I was able to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 64 bit finally.
But it is even worse. gdm (X) doesn't start. I have an Intel graphics driver
and a LG E2350V HD monitor.
In the X.0.Log file I see : Screens found, but none have a usable configuration.

I have got a toshiba A100-165. With mobility radeon X1400. This runs fine under
Ubuntu 9.10. But under Ubuntu 10.04 the display crashes within the 2 first
minutes of session running. Everything is running fine butr the display I can
control remotely
Since it happens even with nouveau drivers and old nvidia drivers and only in
Xinerama that's probably a problem of xinerama mode itself with some nvidia
card instruction, not of nvidia binary drivers.
Using twinview is only a temprorary solution since some have dualhead on
different GPUs or
I can confirm the same problem on a fresh install of 10.10. That never
happened to me before with 10.04 or the earlier releases.

ended up with grub rescue, install touched my standard hd, I cannot

If it's of any help, when I had upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 in its
first beta release, I found that deleting the xorg.conf allowed me to
login in low graphics mode. I wouldn't know if it's still the case,
however, but perhaps it's worth trying.

The hotfix driver doesn't support Ubuntu 10.10 yet. The 8.780 driver
included in Ubuntu 10.10 does and it has the same workaround as the
hotfix driver. Use the fglrx that comes with Ubuntu 10.10. This is the
only driver that supports Ubuntu 10.10 until Catalyst 10.10 is release
on amd.com.

The cursor getting stuck between the two screens (using Xinerama for
me) and using 100% CPU was one of the main reasons I attempted to
upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately that didn't work so well. :(
