Obviously we are dealing with (at least two) different bugs here that
cause similiar effects.
The bug that can be expelled with module-udev-detect tsched=0 probably
belongs to pulseaudio rather than to xorg
(BTW: Any hints what's going on here, why does that workaround fix the problem?)

Seems that the 96 drivers have been updated every few months, with the
longest delays being 5 and 8 months. This is an older legacy chipset so
I'm OK with the fact that they don't update their drivers immediately
whenever a Linux distribution updates its graphics packages. Last
update was 7/15

I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10; now I'm experiencing a problem
which is, superficially at least, very similar. I'm using gdm however.
Upon entering the correct password at gdm, the screen blinks and the gdm
