I noticed that while compiling a complex GWT project, I'd encounter a
load average of 15 or so, and my system would freeze up with similar
symptoms as I originally described. Running htop the resource using
processes were all java, although I saw compiz

unused for an hour, it goes to suspend, but then doesn't resume, leaves

X is supposed to support hot-adding of input devices.
Here are the relevant lines that show up during a failed boot but not a
successful one:

The other thing I notice is that there's a separate touchpad device
that's registered between the first and second detections of the
keyboard:

The only way I would be able to run ubuntu-bug would be in nomodeset. Is
that fine, even though the bug involves graphical errors?
