I worked around this issue in 12.04 switching to Gnome. Hardly ideal.
Please tell me if I can provide more information to help find a fix.

Weirdly, this bug does not happen if I turn the screen off using:
xset dpms force off
But it does still happen if I let the gnome screensaver kick in and turn the
monitor off.
Does that mean it's a problem specifically with ACPI? It doesn't happen
with DPMS.

For me changing from the gnome-screensaver to the xscreensaver worked.
I still have around 7% of CPU usage from compiz while the screen is locked,
which in my opinion is still a lot for displaying nothing, but at least it
consumes less battery on my laptop.
I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a HP
I've disabled screensavers and I can replicate the issue only closing
the lid of my laptop (configured to do nothing in power settings)

This looks very similar to my issue, exact same symptoms. Except Ive
upgraded ram 2GB to 4GB. I have AMD 64 3200+ 1Ghz CPU, tower PC, with
Nvidia 7600gt. Last few lines of Xorg log

I've now tried going back to Nux 3.0 and Unity 6.0.0 and the crash still
happens.
The only thing that does seem to work is to uninstall fglrx and use the
radeon driver instead.

And yes, precise worked perfectly on this machine with fglrx. That's
using Unity 5.12 and Nux 2.0.
The crash only happens with the latest trunk builds of Unity 6.x / Nux
3.x. But whatever it is was introduced before Unity 6.0 and and Nux 3.0
were tagged, because I've tried Unity 6.0 + Nux 3.0 and
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

For me this bug is reproducible/ not reproducible on my Thinkpad 410s
depending on wheter I disable/enable the touchpad with Fn-F8 before or
not. However, i always use the Touchpoint when it craches.
Also this is reported for a Nexus Wireless Silent Mouse on
