If I use Gnome with NO effects, it all works very nicely. I guess there
are still bugs in the Nouveau driver on older chipsets like the N34.

1002:6740 Unity does not load after
This bug is caused by bugs #574397 and #1069365.
As you can see in the xorg.conf, the nvidia kernel module cannot be
loaded. This is so, because it was simply not build because of missing
kernel headers. The wrong screen resulution comes from the fallback.
