Your command fixed the problem.!
It turned on the LVDS1 but not in a good configuration. The monitor
settings gui then allowed me to adjust things, without forcing the LVDS1
back off.

Hi Jani.
If VGA attached on before power on:
only VGA has image. DP has backlight on, but no image.
xrandr list both displays.
After pressing Fn+F8, display switch button, both screens will work.
After this i get some warnings in dmesg.
If VGA attached after boot, both displays are working OK.

I can confirm that this is readily reproducible by playing HTML5 YouTube
video, although for whatever reason, Apport keeps directing me to this
duplicate -- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-

Mir+XMir; I
Contra to my earlier no obvious reason, I think this lockup occurs
when playing HTML5 video in the Firefox browser (I don't have
flashplugin installed). I don't have experience with other browsers to
compare. The video starts getting slowed up and then freezes entirely,
along with all graphics,
