Work around is as follows, but is still NOT FULL RESOLUTION:
Use xrandr to add a 1280x768 mode:
xrandr --newmode 1280x768 79.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 768 771 781 798 -hsync
+vsync

xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1280x768

My bug turned out to be a different one, but it manifested itself similar to
this bug. The problem came from having an external monitor connected via the
VGA port at startup. For some reason that caused compiz to respond very slowly.
I have solved the problem by connecting the monitor

Same problem here but I am using Mathematica 8.01.
However, Mathematica did work a few weeks after I upgraded.
It stopped working today. I presume it's the fault of a recent update.
This problem really causes me a lot of trouble because I necessarily
need Mathematica every day!

shaped window.
program display appears to be creating shaped windows based on the opaque
areas of the image.
fluxbox is (regardless of the chosen style) still drawing a frame around the
