Dear Christofer M. Penalver
I am going to install and try the Trusty release for about a month in my laptop
and automatically gather and attach updated debug information via terminal
command apport-collect 1242422. Also I will let you know about my new remarks
via a new comment right here:

Previously I had the issue and could replicate by shutting lid on laptop
and then open.
Upgraded xserver-org-common and xserver-org-core from proposed and this
has resolved the issue.

The default install of Ubuntu 13.10 seems to have this problem for me on an old
Dell Optiplex 740 with built-in GeForce 6150 LE.

Update:
Last night I managed to find a work around this issue. It seems that
for Ubuntu LTS 12.04, the default kernel provided in the updates 'links
to' (I'm not sure what the technical word is) a less recent NVIDIA
driver version, 304.88, while the nvidia driver update installed on my
machine
Is there an ETA on when the patches are going to be merged into master?
