eventually i was able to close the document viewer. then the media player.
still unable to close/restart the system. manually shut the laptop down

Running on current trusty (though is has been going on for a while),
when I'm using KDE and I switch to another VT, when I get back into KDE
the X server is eating up all the CPU (of one core). After a few
minutes it settles down.

I forgot to mention my system settings - I'm using Thinkpad T420 with
Nvidia Optimus. I am *not* using nvidia-prime, as that setup didn't work
for me, instead I'm using the bumblebee setup where X is configured only
for the Intel graphics, and bumblebee is using a second X server to
render 3D
Since panning at least can work via xrandr, I've forked the failure of
xorg.con* to provide equivalent panning function of xrandr without
arbitrary mouse constraint to bug 77321
