I have experienced the same issue an another notebook (C504 from XMG), also
with Ubuntu 14.04.
When I initiate a shutdown, the system freezes and even the SysRQ key-combos do
not work any more.
The strange thing is that I previously used Ubuntu 14.04 Gnome edition and I
never had any

Xorg fails to start after installing the hardware enablement
I had the same issue. After choose NVIDIA legacy binary driver-version 304.125
(proprietary tested and 304.125 with updates). After reboot I lost my desktop
and forced to reinstall the system from the DVD.
Before, I tried to update from 14.10 and failed.
Only works with X.Org X server-Nouveau
Is the r600g driver ready for the Gallium3D infrastructure of big endian
hosts?

Somehow the bug doesn't seem to affect kernel 4.0 (rc6)
I just installed that and now suspend/resume works like a charm.
Looks like it's a combination of components that causes this erratic
behaviour.

Mouse cursor was still active, because system has touchscreen, and using
that works, and if I know where the invisible mouse cursor is, moving
a regular mouse gives me hover (etc) effects. Just the mouse cursor

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:
sudo apt-get clean
Then try
