The results are in: I was unable to boot the daily image to desktop with
modesetting turned on, the OS froze just as it reached the desktop;
ctrl-alt-f1 didn't take me to a TTY. With modesetting off I was able to

Current status: with BIOS A15 and kernel 4.2.0-11-generic I was unable
to get the external screen to connect at all in an X session (a VT
worked more or less fine). Now using kernel 4.3.0-040300rc3-generic and
so far no visible graphical problems at all. I will keep you updated.

Tried another test. In the monitor settings menu under Display there is
a option called "DP 1.2", by default it is set to Enabled. If I set it
to Disabled I get the PIP behaviour - Ubuntu detects the correct native
resolution and the image appears.
If I set it back to Enabled the bug comes back.
I have noticed some interesting behaviour when I use the Picture in
Picture mode on the screen.
With PIP turned off, I get the above issue with no output at the native
resolution.
