Public bug reported:
This has been happening on and off since the Autumn, but only a handful of
times so I haven’t been able to discover an underlying cause. It appears to
trigger when I am using an application using GL, especially games though it has
happened with just VLC, firefox and a file
Success!!
I simply removed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so completely,
so X was forced to use a standard frame buffer.
Sound no longer worked, but by removing alsa-base & pulseaudio &
reinstalling, I got sound back again.
So now I can play videos w/o using the GPU at all!
Wooppeee!
The video glitches only happen when the GPU switches between the GPU on
and the GPU off.
Otherwise, the display is solid, both when the GPU is enabled, and when
it is disabled.
Other symptoms:
The GPU turns on and off every 3 seconds or so when the system first
starts up.
However, after the
Christopher: I can reproduce behaviour of missing kernel events with
nvidia drivers during HDMI hotplugging in "liveUSB" environment of
Xenial (I booted it in persistence mode). Is it correct way to collect
debugging information or should I need to install Xenial into real

The Kensington Orbit Trackball is a USB device with two physical
buttons, a scroll ring, and the ball. By default EmulateMiddleButton is
disabled, but should be enabled as there is no third button.
The only reason I'm reporting this is that I really really like this
device -

It looks like upstream kernel doesn't solve completely the problem:
uname -a
Linux carlosLT 4.4.0-040400-generic #201601101930 SMP Mon Jan 11 00:32:41 UTC
2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
However, it does no hangs anymore when I switch nouveau<->nvidia
(355.11). No need to restart.
