but I don't think the readability of Unity8 desktop should be the
motivator. Rather, Unity8 desktop scaling should be solved with a
configurable scale factor that just makes text (and widgets
proportionally) larger without moving

correction:
Downgrade from 304.132 to 304.131:
- CTRL+ALT+F1 to console
- login
- sudo apt-get remove nvidia*
- sudo apt-get autoremove
- sudo apt-get install nvidia-304=304.131-0ubuntu3
- reboot
And prevent updates of the driver like shown in comment 18.
the fix of the referred bug has been released in 1:0.3.3 which is the latest
version available in 16.04. However this version is crashing..

Dear all, I am so glad I can post a solution (or at least workaround)
for this.
Instead of downgrading from 304.132 to the previous version 304.131,
I've followed the suggestion on
