A workaround, if you really need auto-login, is to install lightdm (at this point still choose gdm3), enable auto-login via gnome settings, then switch to lightdm (sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3). Not sure why it autologins but it does. Can't lock the gnome session however as not using gdm anymore. --
