The following all results in a black screen:

I can usually reboot by blindly pressing ctrl+alt+f1 ctrl+alt+del
ctrl+alt+del sot it is not frozen, but no console
Ups, for got to mention this was on a eMac with a Radeon 9200

This PPA also solves the issue for me. With out it the latest daily
locks as soon as i click my username on the login screen.

I also tested it briefly on Lucid, there it didn't seam to work at all,
but more testing is needed here as i was on a buggy test machine.
