Sorry Sebastian, I don't use Unity or Gnome.
But I've analyzed what the mentioned system settings plugin did. It
wrote a new file $HOME/.kde/env/qt-graphicssystem.sh with a single line
"export QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=raster".
Maybe you can find an appropriate place to set that environment variable

In short, I switched KDE's graphicssystem from default to raster and

artifacts, making it almost impossible to read. If I switch focus to
some other window, the text looks normal, and when switching focus back
to the xterm window the text still looks normal. It's only when
a) driver module prominent in the backtrace b) reported explicitly
against compiz c) not reproducable on nvidia here => most likely an X11

it has been fixed by some update. I still have the same symptoms now and
then, but that seems to be a known bug in Unity, where it doesn't
interact nicely with the screen saver.

Every now and then X hangs. I can still see what was on the screen when
the hang occurs and I can move the mouse, but I can't interact with
anything, using keyboard shortcuts to switch workspaces doesn't work,
and so on. I think it has never happened

screen is locked properly, but the TFT backlight isn't turned off.
