For the life of me I cannot see why the Sys V init system was replaced. It was simple, and easy to understand, and you only had to do it once or twice a year except when debugging forced many reboots. Even then it was more than fast enough. I am having real trouble trying to work out what starts

OK, I just ran /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_tst -p and got "Error: unable to open display" I ran xinit, which produced a black screen with a white terminal in it, then ran /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_tst -p -d :0 and got OpenGl vendor string: Nvidia Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 73

OK, that xlog file was full of failures, so I wondered if it was something to do with my profile. I have made a new one: as root mv /home/bob /home/bob.old cp /etc/skel /home/bob chown bob:bob -R /home/bob reboot - exactly the same. So it was nothing to do with my profile then. curiously, havi
