The issue I described in post #39 is still present (I'm stuck to
ubuntu-drivers-common to version 1:0.2.91.4), but seems what I described is a
different bug than many users reported here. What I need to do? Open a new bug?

I have the same problem. Updated yesterday from nvidia-common 0.2.91.6 to
0.2.91.7 and then restarted the computer. I see the loading logo of ubuntu,
then a black screen, with no possibility to run a shell. All freezed.
Assuming the problem may be the new kernel also installed 3.13.0-36.63 I
I find the bug trace in var/crash
Apport titled it: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort()
(this is the crash loggin in with 3.11 kernel, resultin in workin GUI but no
hardware acceleration)

Downgrading nvidia-common and ubuntu-driver-common to version 0.2.91.4
solve the problem for me.

Since the 3D acceleration seems work good (all screensaver works great, and 3D
games like Openarena too), I decide to investigate.

X3100 intel

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic on a laptop (Acer Extensa 5220) with X3100 Intel
graphic card.
Booting whit kernel 2.6.31-14 (default for karmic) I have always a complete
system freeze after about 3 second after login.

Despite from sistem - aspect- grafic effects says that compiz was disable, I
had to make compiz non-executable:
sudo chmod a-x /usr/bin/compiz
Now , booting with kernel 2.6.31-14 and defaul xorg.conf (without vesa), the
system works great.
So, for me, the problem is compiz and driver intel.
