The screen freezes and I can only manipulate the mouse curser. I can see
that the curser still is context sensitive (changes to I-beam shape over
text-fields etc), but there is no other response from X. Attaching to a
different console (ctrl-alt-#) gives me only a black screen

Please ignore my comment, as I see this bug is only related to Inte-
cards and there is a separate bug-listing for ati.

I have the exact same problem, using an Ati HD3650 graphics card on a HP
EliteBook. As #740126 seems to be related to Intel only I can't see that
this is a duplicate.
In my case, this will happen very randoml
