The recommended as well as the current proprietary driver provided by
Ubuntu do not work with my graphics card. Even though Jockey says the
driver is active and in use, it actually is not used but some kind of 2D
fallback. NVIDIA settings manager does not recognize my graphics card

When I remove all proprietary drivers, I can run all of these
applications. So this seems to be a bug with the proprietary drivers
provided for Ubuntu 11.10.
Actually there is a newer driver available from the NVIDIA homepage. I
might try it to see if the problem is fixed there.

Thanks for posting! I have tried that on a Lucid Live CD by booting with
kernel option text, installing the ppa version and then sudo xinit
gdm. Everything runs fine for 1 or 2 minutes, when the system hangs. I
can press ctrl-alt-del however, then I get a white box with some console

I was able to make this work, which may also help to pinpoint the
problem. I have had this problem at least since Jaunty (maybe also on
Ibex, but def. not on Hoary), now also on Karmic (Ubuntu). Steps I took
to make the tablet work on the first screen:
1. Download the attached custom_wacom.fdi
Forgot to say, no need to alter anything manually in your xorg.conf,
this fdi file is the way to do it, it will be hotplugged into X by the
HAL.

Oh great, I have installed the package today, looks good so far. I will report

Oh, I was indeed using kernel 2.6.30-rc5 when reproducing the bug.
However, I switched to the old kernel after resetting for the bug report

It happened again this morning, and again, scim was defunct. I will have
