Bug occurs after resuming from suspend.
I shut the lid, which is set to suspend on close.
Resume is triggered by lifting the lid.
The bug seems to only occur after prolonged suspend states (e.g. being
suspended from morning to afternoon).

worked on.

What is missing from all synaptics drivers is support for three
individual fingers, i.e., real multitouch support. However, most
firmwares are capable of detecting three objects on the pad, so there is
still hope that this information can be enabled.

I tried using the xorg-edgers ppa, it made things a little better for
me. Windows now move smoothly if they aren't too big. Still, it's not a
