But what is strange is that even the laptops start window or the screen
shown when removing the boot hard disk from the laptop and starting the
laptop without boot hard disk shows an orange background. Thus this
might be a very strange hardware failure of the laptops graphics card.

As recommended by Chris Halse Rogers wrote on 2009-11-01 on I have
(hopefully) correctly activated kms nouveau.modeset=1.
The first time the xrandr_cycle test worked fine with all resoluti
With KMS parameter nouveau.modeset=1 some issues during startup occur:
1. During sartup when showing the ubuntu logo, the resolution with kms is for a
few seconds lower than with kms.
2. Before increasing the resolution, the logo is destroyed for about 5 seconds,
afterwards it seems to reappear
As requested I have created a follow-up bug Bug #473409 with kms activated.
Please note that besides the resolutions above, the xrandr_cycle test was fine
for all resolutions.
Maybe the failing resolutions have something to do with not configured kms
settigs.

I have tested all screen resolutions manually using ubuntu's display
configuration.
Only the following can be activated successfully:
1680 x 1050 16:10
1280 x 10245:4
832 x 6244:3
640 x 480 4:3
All others either fail with going back to login screen or end up with a
new pictur

Forgot to say, that now were the nouveau driver is running, the display
quality seems to be even better as the display quality of the driver
'nv'.
