I think the issue (if it's the same) is even more strange in my case.
At startup the right resolution and rotation is used but I still get the "Could
no apply.." message. As soon as I press close on that message, the display
config is reset to "standard" - only one screen working.

I created the xorg.conf as described in #18. Now the screen remains
black and I have to switch to tty7 manually. I can login there and
things work, but the screen is very dark (in all ttys) and brightness
control does not change anything.
