My apologies. I didn't get around to trying it, but I did eventually
upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04, and have been unable to reproduce the problem.
So consider it closed.

FWIW I have an identical setup to Wayne Scott, but My Thinkpad is an
X230 with swivel touchscreen. I upgraded to 15.10 almost immediately
after it was released, and have been suffering from this issue ever
since (15.04 worked way better than 14.04, so I had high hopes). It
mainly crops up for me

Ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.10, I haven't been able to exit
fullscreen without video crashing. There are rare cases when I've been
able to safely exit, but more times than not, it doesn't. This is
typically when I'm using Chrome to watch YouTube or Twitch video
