I have the exact same problem here. I also installed Ubuntu 11.10 (i
used the "Beta 1 LiveCD" but my packages are all up to date at the
moment)
I'll try to attatch the log-files too... (launchpad is a bit confusing)

Was selecting images in an image folder with thumbnails. Whole screen
goes to mush. recovers but afterwards backgrounds & utilities bars no
crashed in "ubuntu classic (no effects)" as well which I find weird. Was
using terminal programs and a firefox at the time so it shouldn't
stress the GPU much.

Alt-Tabbing between windows the system freezes. this occurs once I have
programs open on all 4 workspaces... reproduced several times (workspace
1 - firefox, workspace 2- libre office, workspace 3- pdf viewer,
workspace 4 - nautil
Disabling DRI results in X being horribly slow, therefore I cannot use
it on my VIA EPIA EN12000EG.
