every time i try to enable compiz computer freezes. Compiz works for a
short time before the freeze kicks in.

crashes were getting annoying so what i did was log on to diagnostic
mode from grub and then logged in to my account and became root by "sudo
su" then started x by "startx". You know what i have not encountered a
single crash since yesterday. will keep posting about this.

ok i am a bit new to ubuntu so i was stuck. It seems in order to kill the
screen saver you have to issue
sudo killall gnome-screensaver
again after doing
sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver
so this seems to be the temporary workaround for now.

X crashes screen goes between blank and
this crash of x seems to be triggered when ever screensaver kicks in or
when i go to change some/any screensaver related setting. Sometimes it
happens when i am casually surfing net. So i have done this.
sudo killall gnome-screensaver
gconftool-2 --type boolean -s
