Considering that newer graphics cards are relatively cheap, I fixed my
graphic issues with a
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750 Ti WindForce 2X OC
. Just wanted to leave a short note on the model so others have a
reference on what works.
Issues to consider:

IMHO the flickering is caused by using 2 graphic cards for the unity
desktop and not by connecting a 3rd Monitor. (seems to be consistant
with previous posts )
I'm able to turn the flickering on / off by enabling / disabling my
4th monitor which is connected to my second Radeon HD 6450
Setup:
After upgrading LTS from 12.04 to 14.04 I have the same issue.
I have a 4 monitor setup with 2 graphic cards. I tried a lot of
configruations / drivers, but the only thing that worked was
completly uninstalling fglrx and connecting 3 monitors to 1 graphic
card.
